Explore the best neighborhoods in Chiang Mai by scooter or motorbike
The walled historic center with over 30 temples, markets, and guesthouses
Chiang Mai's Old City is the moat-enclosed historic quarter with over 30 temples, including Wat Chedi Luang and Wat Phra Singh. A scooter rental here lets you zip between temples, reach the Sunday Walking Street on Ratchadamnoen Road, and ride out through any of the four gates to the surrounding neighborhoods. Most sois inside the moat are quiet and easy to ride.
Driving Routes
Ride west from Suan Dok Gate up the winding mountain road to Doi Suthep temple (30 min, 15 km uphill). Head south on Route 108 toward Hang Dong and the Grand Canyon water park (20 min). The moat ring road itself is a practical loop for orientation rides.
Safety Tips
The moat road is one-way clockwise on the outer lane and counterclockwise on the inner lane. Memorize which gate you came from, as GPS can be confusing inside the moat. Sunday Walking Street closes Ratchadamnoen Road to traffic 4-11 PM.
Trendy cafe district with co-working spaces, boutiques, and street art
Nimmanhaemin (Nimman) is Chiang Mai's hip neighborhood west of the Old City, packed with specialty coffee shops, co-working spaces like CAMP, and One Nimman lifestyle mall. A motorbike is the best way to explore Nimman's grid of numbered sois, each with their own character. The area is also the closest base for riding up to Doi Suthep temple.
Driving Routes
Ride west on Huay Kaew Road directly to Doi Suthep (25 min from Nimman Soi 1). Head south to the Chiang Mai University area and Ang Kaew Reservoir for sunset views (5 min). East through the Suan Dok Gate takes you into the Old City in 5 minutes.
Safety Tips
Nimman's sois are mostly one-way; follow the flow. Parking is tight near One Nimman and MAYA mall on weekends. Huay Kaew Road toward Doi Suthep is a fast four-lane road, so merge carefully. Watch for university students on bikes near CMU.
Central tourist zone with nightly markets, hotels, and Ping River access
The Night Bazaar area along Chang Klan Road is Chiang Mai's main tourist shopping district, with the original Night Bazaar, Kalare Center, and Anusarn Market running every evening. A scooter rental here puts you close to the Ping River, Warorot Market (Chiang Mai's oldest), and the Iron Bridge walking street. Hotels in this zone are well-connected to all parts of the city.
Driving Routes
Ride north along the Ping River to Warorot Market and the Flower Market (5 min). Head east across Nawarat Bridge to the Charoen Muang area for local restaurants. South on Charoen Prathet Road reaches the Wua Lai silver-making district (10 min) and Saturday Walking Street.
Safety Tips
Chang Klan Road is busy with pedestrians spilling off the market stalls at night (6-10 PM). Park at designated lots rather than on the main road. The Tha Pae Road intersection is one of Chiang Mai's busiest, so be alert.
Quiet local neighborhood north of the Old City with authentic food and calm streets
Santitham is a residential area just north of the Old City moat, favored by long-stay visitors for its affordable apartments, local Thai eateries, and proximity to the Old City without the tourist prices. A scooter from Santitham reaches the Chang Phueak Gate night food stalls (famous for Khao Kha Moo) in 3 minutes and Nimman in 10.
Driving Routes
Ride south through Chang Phueak Gate into the Old City (3 min). Head west to Nimman's cafe scene (10 min). North on Chotana Road takes you to Mae Rim, elephant sanctuaries, and the start of the Samoeng Loop (25 min).
Safety Tips
Santitham's residential streets are calm with minimal traffic. The Chang Phueak Road can back up during school hours (7-8 AM, 3-4 PM). Chotana Road northbound is a main artery, so watch for faster-moving traffic when joining.
Southern outskirts with furniture workshops, Royal Park, and Grand Canyon
Hang Dong sits south of the city center along Route 108, known for its furniture and handicraft workshops, Royal Park Rajapruek botanical gardens, and the Chiang Mai Grand Canyon water park. Renting a motorbike here is ideal for day trips south toward Doi Inthanon, Thailand's highest peak, without backtracking through city traffic.
Driving Routes
Ride south on Route 108 to Doi Inthanon National Park summit (90 min, 60 km), passing Ob Luang Gorge and twin pagodas at the peak. Head east to San Kamphaeng Hot Springs (30 min). Royal Park Rajapruek is 10 minutes north on the Canal Road.
Safety Tips
Route 108 to Doi Inthanon is a well-maintained two-lane highway but has steep sections above 1,000 meters. Temperature drops noticeably at the summit, so bring a jacket. Hang Dong's main market area can be busy on weekends.
Mountain gateway with elephant parks, zip-lines, and the Samoeng Loop
Mae Rim district starts just north of the city and climbs into the mountains, home to elephant nature parks, zip-line adventures, and the famous Samoeng Loop scenic route. Doi Suthep temple overlooks the city from 1,000 meters. A motorbike is essential here because attractions are spread across mountain roads with no public transport.
Driving Routes
The Samoeng Loop (Route 1096/1269) is a 100-km circuit through mountain jungle and hill tribe villages, one of northern Thailand's best day rides. Doi Suthep's mountain road (Route 1004) from the city gate to the summit is 15 km of switchbacks with viewpoints. Continue past Doi Suthep to Doi Pui Hmong Village for coffee and views.
Safety Tips
Mountain roads are steep with blind curves. Use lower gears on descents rather than relying only on brakes. Morning fog is common above 800 meters. The Samoeng Loop is rideable on a 125cc scooter but a 150cc+ is more comfortable on the hills. Carry rain gear year-round.
