Tubkaek is the northernmost mainland beach in the Ao Nang cluster, a 25-30 minute ride from central Ao Nang on Route 4202 and the local 6024 spur. It is exclusive and very quiet, dominated by upscale resorts (Amari Vogue Krabi, Tubkaek Sunset Beach Resort, the Ritz-Carlton Reserve at Phulay Bay nearby) and famous for two things: the silent five-island sunset over the Hong Islands archipelago, and the steep Khao Ngon Nak (Dragon Crest) hike that climbs 565 m in 7.4 km round-trip from the Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park trailhead. There are no on-site rental shops; bikes come from Ao Nang central with delivery, and there is no fuel between Klong Muang and the village. Plan a daylight ride out and back unless you are staying overnight at one of the resorts.
Route 6024 north of Klong Muang is the access spur to Tubkaek and the Khao Ngon Nak trailhead, completely unlit beyond the Amari Vogue compound. Tight curves cluster at km marker 4-5 from Ao Nang central; expect occasional roaming cattle and dogs and informal roadside parking near the trailhead. Route 4202 itself is fast and quiet and the curves are gentle but the night ride back is the area's main hazard.
The Khao Ngon Nak trailhead lot inside the national park is free for day hikers and operates 08:00-18:00; lot is reasonably sized with informal verge overflow on the resort soi during peak season. Tubkaek Beach public access has informal daylight-only parking on Route 6024 with no enforced fees. Resort guest parking at Amari Vogue and Tubkaek Sunset is free; non-guests cannot enter compounds.
There is no fuel station in Tubkaek itself; refuel at the PTT at the Ao Nang Circle / Nong Thale junction on Route 4203 / 4034 before the 22-25 km northbound run. A Bangchak / PTT pair in the Ao Luek district 25 km north of Tubkaek covers the onward run if you continue to the mangroves at Ban Bor Thor.
Route 4202 and 6024 are low-traffic stretches outside of resort-shuttle windows, but the very quietness encourages local riders into 80-100 km/h. Khao Ngon Nak trailhead parking peaks 08:30-09:30 on dry-season weekends, so arrive earlier or expect a queue at the sign-in hut. Daytime visibility is fine; the unlit nighttime ride back is the single biggest collision risk.
Park free at the national park trailhead, sign in at the hut and hike 7.4 km round-trip with 565 m gain to the summit panorama; last entry is 14:00 and a wonky wooden ladder near the top demands daylight on the descent.
Continue north on Route 4202 then Route 4 to Ao Luek and Ban Bor Thor for a 1.5-2 hour mangrove kayak through the Tham Lod sea caves (1,700 THB/person); pristine, far less crowded than Phang Nga Bay.
Park your bike at the public beach access, hire a longtail directly from Tubkaek's quiet sand for a 15-minute hop to Koh Hong's lagoon entrance, with snorkelling and lunch on the island; calmest seas December-February.
November-April is the prime window: the Khao Ngon Nak trail is dry, Tubkaek's offshore waters are calm and the five-island sunset reads cleanest. Resort occupancy peaks December-February and trailhead parking can fill by 09:00. May-October the trail becomes slippery and the wooden steps near the summit hazardous when wet; the park sometimes restricts entry on extreme-weather days. Beach driftwood accumulates after late-August offshore swells. Hong Island longtail tours can be delayed or cancelled in heavy seas through September. The night ride back to Ao Nang is unsafe year-round; staying overnight at a resort is the realistic alternative for sunset.
The single biggest hazard is the unlit Route 4202 / 6024 ride back to Ao Nang after dark; cattle, dogs and informal parking create blind-collision risk. Do not start the Khao Ngon Nak hike after 14:00, the trail closes at 18:00 and the wonky wooden ladder near the summit is dangerous in fading light. Wet-season descent on the rooty trail demands closed-toe hiking shoes; near-miss reports are common in monsoon but verified injuries are UNCONFIRMED. There is no on-site fuel; running dry on Route 4202 leaves you 22 km from the nearest pump.
